Mr. Humphrey Leung Wins the Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2003

An Honor for His Remarkable Professional Achievements and Significant Contributions to His Alma Mater and the Community

Hong Kong, China – Mar 27, 2003 – The winners of Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2003 (OPAA) was officially announced today at a ceremony.  This is our honor that Mr. Humphrey Leung, President and Managing Director of Solomon Systech Limited, proposed by Prof. Y.S. Lee, Chair Professor of the Electronic Engineering, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, wins this award.  The award was officiated by the Guest of Honour Dr. Henry Tang Ying-yen, Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology.

Launched in 1996, the biennial “Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award” Selection is jointly organized by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations (FHKPUAA) for the fourth time. It aims to pay tribute to the distinguished graduates of PolyU and its forerunners for their illustrious professional accomplishments and significant contributions to the community. There are five alumni honoured the award this year. The seven-member Panel of Judges, made up of government officials and renowned community leaders, is chaired by Dr. Henry Tang Ying-yen.

Prof. Y.S. Lee, being the nominator, commented that Mr. Leung had made great contributions to the Hong Kong electronics industry. “Through the setting up of a company Mr. Leung demonstrates that Hong Kong is a suitable place for the development of high-tech and high value-added industry. He is a role model for PolyU graduates,” said Prof. Y.S. Lee.

Being the award winner, Mr. Humphrey Leung made his remark at the ceremony. “First of all, I have to thank Professor YS Lee, Professor Joshua Wong and Mr. CD Tam. Not only because they are my nominator and my referees for this event. All three of them are also my mentors and my role models in helping me to build up my career in the industry,” said Mr. Leung. “I feel extremely honored to be a graduate of PolyU for it has been one of the best HK technical colleges in providing electronic engineering studies. The technical knowledge that I learned from PolyU, together with the training of analytical strength, persistent will-power and working with people provides me a very solid foundation for my present work to perform a CEO of a high-tech IC company that a lot of people still think this industry is something impossible for the Hong Kong people to do.” Mr. Leung continued, “PolyU has trained and helped a lot us and the Hong Kong society to create a lot of success that people think is impossible.”

About Mr. Humphrey Leung

Mr. Humphrey Leung was one of the first Hong Kong semiconductors IC design engineers.  He brought the semiconductors IC design knowledge from Silicon Valley to Hong Kong in the 70’s and trained up many local engineers and professionals for IC product development in Hong Kong.  Since he joined Motorola Semiconductors Asia Pacific Division in Hong Kong in 1984, he was instrumental in many new product developments and contributed to making Motorola IC design center becoming the largest center of its type in Hong Kong.  In addition to IC design he worked with Motorola USA on high voltage silicon semiconductor process development and gold-bump manufacturing process both of which were key breakthrough to make Hong Kong in becoming Center of Excellence for advanced LCD driver systems.

In 1999, with encouragement from Motorola, he sets up and runs his own local semiconductors company, Solomon Systech Limited.  He is currently the President and Managing Director of the company.  Solomon Systech is a Hong Kong based fabless semiconductor company focuses to develop semiconductor IC products for global mobile display market.  Mr. Leung manages his business with clear vision and strategic insight.  He invents innovative processes, adopts technology-driven information systems, introduces competitive high value added products and gains global market acceptance and outstanding financial performance.

His achievement is also being recognized through several major industrial and customer awards granted for the company in 2001 and 2002.  In addition, Mr. Leung has the honor to receive the Young Industrialist Awards of Hongkong 2001.
