Image Processors for Portable Video Display Applications

Powerful imaging engines driving displays from showing JPEG photo to DVD video playback

(Hong Kong – 23 June 2006) Solomon Systech Limited is proud to launch their image processors, the SSD1921 and SSD1922, which support up to 480RGBx272 resolution video displays for camera phones, 3G phones, car AVs, game consoles and digital photo frames …etc. The two ICs are powerful imaging engines that fulfill the booming market needs of colorful JPEG photo displays, fancy multi-media interfaces, as well as DVD video playback capabilities.

SSD1921 & SSD1922 Image Processors
– The ultimate solutions in connecting displays to different devices for different systems with multi-media functions

Both SSD1921 and SSD1922 have 256KB of memory for display frame buffer, JPEG codec buffer and sub-panel display buffer (for SSD1922 only) applied to different types of LCD panels. Various display panel technologies has been taken care of. Mono/grayscale STN, color STN, parallel or serial RGB type TFT, stripe or delta pixel arrangements panel can all be handled by the display engine within SSD1921 and SSD1922. BT656/BT601 video port for CMOS image sensor or digital NTSC/PAL video signals can be captured using built-in hardware JPEG encoder or the input signal can be previewed on LCD panel. Embedded I2C host helps in configuring these devices with ease.

SSD1921 Image Processor in LQFP-144 package

In addition to JPEG encoder, hardware JPEG decoder was also incorporated into SSD1921 and SSD1922. Besides JPEG photo decoding onto display, motion JPEG with fast frame rate (QVGA 24bit color at 30fps) can be easily realized with most common 16bit MCUs. Advanced 2D graphics engine with alpha blending, drawing functions, PIP displays, GUI of different effect can be built.

SSD1921 and SSD1922 have SD/SDIO host controller built-in. Connectivity to SD memory card for external storage, or expansion to SDIO type of devices will be much easier than before.

Interface to host MCU can use 6800 or 8080 typed direct addressing mode for fast 8bit or 16bit access. For MCUs with limited I/O pins, indirect addressing mode helped a lot with no need to connect the address buses.

For SSD1921, common single display panels without RAM type can be supported. The maximum color depth support of panel can be as high as 18bit in parallel RGB TFT or 24bit in serial RGB TFT. SSD1921 package is LQFP-144 which can be used in any consumer electronic devices and automotive display controllers.

Whereas, for SSD1922, the package is BGA-144 with both main panel and sub-panel support. The small package of SSD1922 makes it suitable for any kind of portable devices and even mobile phone use. The main and sub-panels can be either with RAM or without RAM typed. Maximum color depth of parallel 24bit TFT panel without RAM can be supported.
