2003 HONG KONG AWARD FOR INDUSTRY:

Technological Achievement Grand Award

Hong Kong, China – Oct 27, 2003 – It is officially announced at a ceremony today that Solomon Systech wins the 2003 Hong Kong Award for Industry: Technological Achievement Grand Award. The award is officiated by the honourable Tung Chee Hwa, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

The Hong Kong Awards for Industry (HKAI) is an annual Awards Scheme established in 1989 to recognise and encourage excellence as well as to promote successful practices and strategies in different aspects of industrial performance.  Awards are made annually in seven categories. To reflect the prestige of the Awards Scheme, only one Hong Kong Award for Industry is presented in each category every year to the most outstanding entry.

Following its success in winning one Grand Award and three Organizer Awards in the 2001 Hong Kong Awards for Industry, Solomon Systech is participating in the Technological Achievement Award this year again and this is the only category the company has entered.  “We won four awards in 2001 including the Grand Award in Export Marketing, and Organizer Awards in Quality, Technological Achievement and Productivity.  We have set ourselves up as an all round world class IC company,” said Mr. Humphrey Leung, President and Managing Director of Solomon Systech.  “With two years of effort and focus in developing proprietary and innovative IC technology for the latest display technology – the OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display, we have made the new display technology come true and become commercialized.”

“OLED is a new display technology that will grow significantly in the future market.  It has the potential to create a lot of new applications and replace some of the existing display technologies,” said Mr. Leung.  “However, any new technology always has its strengths and weaknesses and it is the same with OLED.  The innovative circuitry designs of our ICs accentuate the advantages of OLED while getting around its weaknesses,” Mr. Leung continued.   “Our OLED ICs are playing an important role in the commercialization of OLED.  All of us will be amazed by the transformation of the world mobile phone industry with this high resolution, self-emissive OLED display.”

“I am so glad Solomon Systech has won the Hong Kong Award for Industry which recognizes our technological contribution and the positive impact we have made to the global technology,” said Mr. Leung.

Comments from Judging Panel

From the technology aspect, there is no doubt that the company is leading the way at the hi-tech edge of IC applications. As the first commercialized single chip solution with an affordable price tag, the company’s OLED controller driver IC has gained worldwide recognition and is expected to revolutionize a significant number of display applications in many commercial and consumer products.

With the strong technical and marketing expertise of the management team, the company has demonstrated a showcase of technology originating in Hong Kong, both in terms of intellectual properties and technological achievement.
