Reducing
power consumption is one of the most important tasks for
battery-operated portable devices nowadays as small
physical size and light weight are the general norm. New
portable devices such as mobile phones, PDAs and digital
cameras all deploy large, vivid color LCD for better user
experience. However, a bigger and brighter display will
consume more power as the display backlight is the single
largest power consumer in a typical portable device. The
LCD module accounts for around 30~50% of the battery drain
when the display is ON.
Dynamic
Backlight Control (DBC) technique attempts to reduce the
backlight power consumption while maintaining the general
image fidelity and quality. While there are quite a number
of digital signal processing techniques for DBC, Solomon
Systech provides a balanced solution between performance
and hardware cost, thereby bringing optimal benefit to our
customers.

With
deployment of Solomon Systechˇ¦s DBC solution, the power
consumption of the backlight can be reduced by up to 50%.
Depending on the original image content and the required
image fidelity after processing, power saving varies. In
most cases, the power reduction ranges from 10% to 50% for
still images and 20% to 60% for moving pictures (video).

Solomon
Systech's DBC solution allow user to choose among different
settings:
|
-
Conservative
Mode reserves image fidelity as its first priority while
performing power reduction. In some cases, only 10%
power can be saved. The setting is ideal when a user is
interacting with a computer interface (e.g. reading an
e-mail or searching for a phone number).
-
Aggressive
Mode attempts to save power within an acceptable level
of image quality degradation in such cases as when a
user watches video. Color tone differences may occur in
some cases; however, power saving can increase by up to
60%.
-
Normal
Mode takes a balanced approach and is ideal for still
images. In this setting, image quality and power saving
stand between Conservative and Aggressive modes.
